IBA Public Speaking Society:

The Public Speaking Society has upheld IBA’s legacy of fashioning leaders through ideas. It has worked for the past decade in changing the dynamics of how people perceive public speaking and debating. It has managed to instill not just the art of public speaking, but nurtured individuals in such a manner that they felt confident and empowered, two qualities extremely essential in future entrepreneurs and business graduates. The society’s main focus has been to promote the art, and extend the reach of public speaking both inside IBA and out, through the provision of platforms for likeminded individuals to exhibit their talents and gain from those of others. It has thus far managed to fulfil the aforementioned by providing training camps and one on one sessions free and open to all. These training sessions include different forms of public speaking such as, but not limited to: Model United Nations, Parliamentary debates, Declamations and speeches.
As a society, we do not just host tournaments, but we send our students to different tournaments all over the world. Over the past few years IBA PSS has managed to send its teams to Model United Nations conferences in Turkey, the Netherlands, Italy, the United States and Canada. In addition to that, we participate in the largest model united nations in the World, the Harvard WorldMUN. The public speaking society has proved to be the beacon of light for the leaders of tomorrow by helping them realize their potential. For every tournament, local or international, the society members conduct fair trials and practice sessions for the teams which go on to represent and win awards for IBA globally. Since its first year, the society has won numerous accolades such as the “Distinguished Delegation” award at the UN Headquarters in New York, followed by winning the second best delegation at Model United Nations Turkey both in 2012, and in 2015. Furthermore, IBA PSS also held the flag up high at the World Model United Nations 2016 in Rome, Italy and 2017 in Montreal, Canada.

MUNIK IX - Reform From Within

On the 19th of September, in an address to the General Assembly, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stressed upon the importance of reform. He spoke of the very concrete fear that exists in society today, a deep mistrust of others and a dread that disregards man-made borders. In the face of such conditions, Secretary General Guterres highlighted that the first response should be reform – Model United Nations IBA, Karachi seeks to carry forward this principle and stress upon personal and organizational reform to combat the world’s troubles.
Reform From Within follows the understanding that the problems threatening global security and peace have evolved and in response, so must the United Nations and its affiliated organizations. As important as organizational change is, however, MUNIK understands that change starts at the personal level. The MUNIK team hopes to impart this understanding to its delegates in order to make the conference an experience for personal growth and development as well as an academic experience like no other.

Words from the President

Dear delegates,

Welcome to MUNIK IX. I, Noor Fatima, will serve as the president for this edition of the annual model United Nations conference and am excited to host you all this January. Organizing an MUN of such a grand scope and incredible legacy is a challenge but the constant support of the convening committee and host team paves a path allowing us to continue on our mission of inculcating a sense of accountability and ownership of the world in our delegates.

An MUN is an intricate machine where each cog must play its role in an efficient and timely manner in order to allow the entire machinery to function effectively. However, a wrong blueprint of the machine might give the impression that it's working, while possibilities of greater efficiency and efficacy are ignored. This year we have dared to "Reform from within" and reprioritize and rekindle our commitment to an educational experience like no other. Our conference will foremost be an academic setting that trains delegates in the art of formal dialogue with the vision of seeing them use those skills to change the world. In an age muddled with hateful narrative, we must all reassess our ideologies and truly reform to build a world conducive for peace and prosperity.

Join us this January to experience a bold new MUNIK, and let's take a closer look at our global institutional infrastructures and reform them to achieve unrealized levels of cooperation.

Words from the Director General

Dear delegates,

I am honored to welcome you to the ninth edition of Model United Nations IBA Karachi. My name is S. M. Hammad Zaidi and it is my privilege to serve as the Director General of this conference. I am a senior at IBA, majoring in Accounting and Finance and have been part of the Model UN community for about six years now. My Model UN experience has made me a firm believer of the power of dialogue and that is one of the many things we wish to inculcate in the youth of today.

Our theme this year, “Reform From Within” stems from the need for change from one’s own-self. The problems that we face individually, as well as a community, have both evolved and therefore, it is imperative that we too adapt to such dynamic problems. MUNIK IX aims to do just that by giving the delegates the confidence to voice their opinions, the strength to challenge the status quo and the mindset to solve global problems through comprehensive dialogue.

Let me assure you that my team is working day and night to enrich your MUNIK experience and provide every possible resource to help turn you into an ambassador for global peace.

With that the host team, secretariat and I look forward to seeing you at the largest Model UN conference of the region this January.

Ali Shambeel Jafri

Words from the Secretary General

Dear delegates,

It is my pleasure to invite you all to the ninth edition of Model United Nations IBA, Karachi. My name is Ali Shambeel Jafri and I have the honour of serving as the Secretary General for this conference.

The MUNIK team has always tried its best to maintain relevancy to current world affairs. This year, we embark on the MUNIK journey with the words ‘Reform From Within’, inspired by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’s speech to the General Assembly on the 19 th of September, 2017. We understand reform to be necessary on two levels: individual and organizational. It is important to change our approach to problems. These problems have evolved – and it is only logical that our response does the same. Reform From Within stresses the need for personal reform, little actions such as following traffic rules, minimizing electrical consumption, recycling our waste. Little actions like these accumulate at larger levels; permanent change will only come out of personal change. Organizationally speaking, reform is incredibly important. We need to streamline processes, tone down the bureaucracy and up the people, facilitate stronger and more meaningful discussion.

As an organization, MUNIK has realized the need for such change. On behalf of the MUNIK team, I hope we can impart some of this realization to you.

Welcome to MUNIK.

Words from the USG - General Assembly

Dear delegates,

I’m honoured to welcome you all to the upcoming edition of the Model United Nations IBA Karachi. This year, I will be serving you in the capacity of Under-Secretary General of the General Assembly. I’m currently a sophomore, pursuing my undergrad in Business Administration from IBA. Over the years I have invested myself into public speaking. Since the past three years I have been a part of several local and international conferences, both, as a delegate and as a member of the secretariat.

For me, public speaking is a passion and an art which can truly transform a person from within. This year at MUNIK IX, we have decided to make our future better by adopting the strategy ‘Reform from within’. We believe that in order for global harmony, we need to look and correct our own flaws first. Only then will we be able to stand up and make a significant difference in the world.

I, along with the other Under-Secretary Generals, will monitor the academic quality and ensure to give you all a challenging platform to debate. I want you all to be well-researched and confident, because it is all of you who will set the standard for the conference this year. I look forward to meeting you all this January!

Welcome to MUNIK.

Words from the USG - ECOSOC and Regional bodies

Dear delegates,

It gives me great pleasure to serve as the Under Secretary General for ECOSOC and Regional Bodies and I welcome you all to the ninth edition of Model United Nations IBA Karachi.

Currently, I am a junior at IBA, pursuing Bachelors of Business Administration. As a person who has always been interested in sharing ideas and having discussions on global issues, I have been an active part of the MUN circuit since 2013. From being a delegate to chairing International MUN Conferences, my journey has always taught me one lesson: to never give up. This is one motto I want the delegates at MUNIK IX to follow as I believe as long as you trust your abilities and have the will to participate and make a difference, you will always take one step ahead in life. We aim to make this year’s MUNIK experience a competitive one for you and to bring out the diplomats of tomorrow in our committees. As the Under-Secretary General of ECOSOC and Regional Bodies, I hope delegates leave the committee sessions with quality debate and learning every day. As delegates, make sure you are well prepared for your committee topics and are familiar with the rules of procedures.

This year, broaden your horizons and enhance your diplomatic skills when coming up with solutions that should be substantial. This year is all about you, and how you reform from within. At MUNIK IX, I look forward to four exciting days with fruitful debate and I hope when you evaluate yourself after the conference, you find a more learned and capable speaker inside you. Good luck for the conference, Happy Debating!

Welcome to MUNIK.

Words from the USG - Specialized Agencies

Dear delegates,

I am proud to be serving as the Under Secretary General of Specialized bodies for MUNIK IX and take great pleasure in inviting you to the conference.

With the increased political polarization at a global scale, it is becoming all the more important to prepare a generation of more informed individuals who will be tackling the issues of tomorrow. Reform from within is dependent on a grasp upon not only a contemporary understanding of current issues, but also on historical contexts which developed them. My goal for MUNIK is to help provide that sort of learning experience to the delegates – to create a community of debaters which consists of informed, and empathetic individuals.

With that said, see you in January!

Welcome to MUNIK.
